How to Write a Resume for Skilled Trades Jobs
Trades resumes get evaluated differently than office resumes. Hiring managers and foremen are scanning for proof you can do the work safely and reliably, certifications, tools you know, and specific projects, not polished corporate language. Here's how to structure one that gets read.
Lead with certifications and licenses
Put your certifications near the top, not buried at the bottom. OSHA cards, trade licenses, equipment certifications, and CPR/first aid all signal you can start work without extra onboarding. If a certification has an expiration date, list it so the reader doesn't have to ask.
Describe work in terms of scope, not just duties
Instead of a generic duty list, describe the scale and type of projects you've worked on: residential vs. commercial, square footage or crew size, equipment operated, and any specialty systems. "Framed structural walls on 12 single-family builds" tells a hiring manager more than "framing."
List tools and equipment explicitly
Many trades postings search resumes for specific tool or equipment names. A dedicated "Tools & Equipment" section, even a simple list, makes sure that content is actually on the page instead of implied.
- Power tools and equipment you're proficient with
- Any heavy equipment you're certified to operate
- Software or systems if relevant (e.g. estimating software, BIM tools)
Keep formatting simple and scannable
A one-page resume with clear headings, consistent dates, and no dense paragraphs is easier for a busy hiring manager to scan in the 20-30 seconds most resumes actually get. Save the detail for the interview.
Use an AI tool to tighten it, but keep it accurate
Resume-review tools (including the one built into Kareer Score) are useful for catching missing keywords, vague phrasing, or formatting issues. Treat suggestions as a starting point. Never add a certification, tool, or experience you don't actually have.
